Well Pharmacy - Healthcare App

Well Pharmacy is one of the largest pharmacy chains in the UK, with over 750 stores nationwide. Alongside their community pharmacy network, they offer digital services that help customers manage prescriptions, book consultations, and access healthcare remotely. Their focus on innovation and convenience positions them as a leading player in the future of pharmacy services.

Well Pharmacy wanted to create a mobile app that would connect their customers directly to pharmacy services, allowing for easier prescription management and medication delivery. The aim was to integrate the app securely with NHS systems to verify prescriptions and approvals, while also streamlining the connection to their warehouse network for order fulfillment.

We collaborated with Well Pharmacy’s digital and logistics teams to map the entire user journey—from prescription request to medication delivery. The process involved integrating with the NHS Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) for real-time pharmacist approval, setting up secure channels for patient data handling, and designing the connection between order approvals and warehouse dispatch workflows. Scalability, NHS compliance, and security were primary focuses throughout the development.

We developed a fully native iOS application using Swift to ensure the best performance, security, and integration with device features. AWS serverless cloud architecture was used on the backend to guarantee high availability, automatic scaling, low maintenance overhead, and zero downtime—critical for healthcare operations. The app allows users to request repeat prescriptions, securely verify them through NHS systems, handle payments or exemption claims, and choose between home delivery or pickup from their nearest Well Pharmacy. Once approved, prescription orders are automatically routed to the appropriate distribution center for processing and dispatch, creating a smooth and reliable experience for users.

The new app streamlined the prescription management process for Well Pharmacy customers, reducing the need for physical visits and making access to medication easier and faster. By automating connections between pharmacists, NHS approvals, and distribution centers, Well Pharmacy improved operational efficiency, reduced errors, and enhanced user satisfaction. The AWS serverless infrastructure allowed the app to scale effortlessly, handling traffic spikes without downtime—an essential advantage during peak periods like seasonal flu vaccinations and increased prescription demands. This solution laid a strong foundation for Well Pharmacy's continued digital healthcare expansion.
